The Best Beaches in Tenerife: Black Sand, Golden Bays & Hidden Coves

Fun Zone TenerifeOctober 28, 20268 min read

Tenerife has one of the most varied coastlines in Europe. On the same island you can swim off golden imported sand in the morning, snorkel over black volcanic reef at lunch, and watch the sun drop behind sea cliffs in the evening. The trick is knowing which beach fits your day. This local guide runs through the best beaches in Tenerife, north and south, and how to turn a beach day into something more.

In the sunny south, Playa de las Vistas in Los Cristianos is the easy winner for families: calm, Blue-Flag water, soft sand and everything within reach. A short walk away, El Camisón in Playa de las Americas is smaller and more sheltered. For a livelier scene, La Pinta and the Puerto Colon marina area are the launch point for most boat trips — handy if you want to combine a swim with time on the water.

Costa Adeje raises the comfort level. Playa del Duque is the island at its most polished — fine sand, loungers, upmarket beach clubs — while the chain of little coves below the promenade is perfect for a quieter dip. This whole stretch is also the departure zone for whale and dolphin boats; you can see the full line-up on our things to do in Tenerife page.

The north and the wild coast are a different Tenerife. Playa de las Teresitas near Santa Cruz is the postcard: golden sand shipped from the Sahara, palm trees and a protective breakwater. Benijo and the Anaga beaches are dramatic black-sand surf beaches framed by jagged rock — stunning for photos and sunsets, but respect the Atlantic swell. In the west, the beaches around Los Gigantes sit beneath 600-metre cliffs that are best appreciated from the sea.

If you want more than sunbathing, the coast is where Tenerife earns its reputation. The south-west is one of the best places in the world for year-round whale and dolphin watching — pilot whales live here permanently. A morning whale-watching trip or a sunset catamaran cruise turns a beach day into the highlight of the holiday. Jet ski, parasailing and scuba are all run from the southern marinas.

A few practical tips. The south is reliably warmer and calmer for swimming; the north is greener and wilder but the sea can be rough. Many of the best black-sand beaches have little shade, so bring water and cover. And on wild beaches like Benijo, check the tide before you settle in.

Beach days and sea trips pair naturally with the rest of a Tenerife holiday. On a cloudy afternoon or after dark, our indoor experiences in Playa Las Americas — axe throwing, escape games and quiz battles — keep the group entertained a few minutes from the southern beaches. Browse everything on our activities hub and build the perfect mix of sand, sea and adrenaline.
