Up in the green north of Tenerife, on the edge of Puerto de la Cruz, Loro Parque has grown from a parrot park into one of the most highly rated animal parks in the world. Set in lush subtropical gardens, it is a firm favourite with families and one of the island's most popular days out.
The park is home to the world's largest reserve of parrot species, alongside a huge aquarium with a walk-through shark tunnel, a penguin house recreating Antarctica, gorillas, tigers, big cats and more. It is a full day: come early and plan your route around the shows and feeding times, which are posted at the entrance.
Getting tickets: you can buy at the gate, but booking online in advance is usually cheaper and lets you skip the queue — worth it in high season. If you are also planning Siam Park (the same company's world-famous water park in the south), look for the Twin Ticket, which bundles both at a discount and is valid over several days.
Practical tips. The park is big and hilly, so wear comfortable shoes. Arrive at opening to beat the coach tours. Bring sun cover and water, though there is plenty of shade in the gardens. And leave time for the shows, which are the highlight for most families.
Getting there: Loro Parque is in Puerto de la Cruz in the north, about an hour from the southern resorts. There is a free little "Loro Parque Express" train from the town centre, and many visitors combine the park with a day exploring the historic streets, gardens and Atlantic swimming pools of Puerto de la Cruz.
