Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the two giants of the Canary Islands, and travellers often agonise over which to pick. Both offer year-round sunshine, great beaches and plenty to do, and you can't really go wrong — but they do have different characters. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.
On scenery and nature, Tenerife has the edge for sheer drama. It is home to Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak and a UNESCO site, plus the Masca gorge, the Anaga laurel forest and the cliffs of Los Gigantes. Gran Canaria is often described as a "continent in miniature" — its interior mountains and the Maspalomas dunes are stunning — but Tenerife's volcanic high country is hard to beat.
On beaches, Gran Canaria is often considered the winner for golden sand, thanks largely to the vast dunes and long beaches at Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés. Tenerife's natural beaches are frequently volcanic black sand, with some imported-golden exceptions like Las Teresitas and the manicured resort beaches of Costa Adeje. If a classic golden-sand beach holiday is your priority, Gran Canaria has a slight advantage.
On weather and getting around, both are reliably warm, with the sunny, drier side in the south of each island and a greener, cloudier north. Tenerife is the larger island, so there is more ground to cover but also more variety. Both have good resorts for families, couples and groups, and lively nightlife concentrated in the southern resort towns.
Our honest take: choose Tenerife if you want the most dramatic landscapes, the Teide, world-class whale watching and the widest range of activities; choose Gran Canaria if golden-sand dunes and a slightly more compact island appeal most. Many people end up visiting both over time.
