Where to Stay in Tenerife: The Best Areas for Every Kind of Trip

Fun Zone TenerifeOctober 25, 20267 min read

Tenerife is bigger and more varied than first-time visitors expect, and where you base yourself shapes the whole trip. The island splits broadly into the sunny, resort-heavy south and the greener, more authentic north. Here is how to choose where to stay in Tenerife based on what you are after.

Playa de las Americas & Costa Adeje (south-west) are the classic choice, and for good reason: the most reliable sunshine, the best beaches for swimming, the biggest range of hotels, and almost every activity on your doorstep. Las Americas is livelier and more budget-friendly with the main nightlife strip; neighbouring Costa Adeje is calmer and more upmarket. If you want sun, beach and things to do without a car, base here. It is also where Fun Zone and our activities are, minutes from the hotels.

Los Cristianos (south) is the friendly, slightly more local-feeling neighbour — a real town with a working harbour, a lovely beach and an easy, unpretentious vibe. Great for families and couples who want the southern sunshine without the party scene.

Costa del Silencio & Las Galletas (far south) are quieter and better value, popular with long-stay visitors and those who want a more residential base. You will want a car here to make the most of the island.

Puerto de la Cruz (north) is the heart of the greener, more traditional Tenerife — historic streets, botanical gardens, Atlantic swimming pools and the Loro Parque zoo next door. The weather is a touch cooler and cloudier than the south, but the character is unbeatable. Ideal for culture, nature and a slower pace.

Santa Cruz & La Laguna (north-east) are for city lovers: the capital's shops, museums and the enormous February carnival, plus the UNESCO old town of La Laguna and the wild Anaga mountains on the doorstep. Less beach, more real-life Tenerife.

Our honest take: if it is your first visit and you want sun, beaches and activities with the least hassle, stay in the south-west. If you have been before, or you want culture and dramatic landscapes, pick the north — and whichever base you choose, the island is small enough to explore the rest on day trips.
